About The Arnold

Located 2 hours north of New York City in the western Catskills, the Arnold House is a country retreat. Set on 7 acres and nestled into the forest of Shandelee Mountain, staying at The Arnold is an experience more akin to staying with old friends than a traditional hotel.

With nine guest rooms in the main inn, a two-room garden suite and a king-sized studio room with private terrace in our garden house, our Tavern restaurant, the 1960s Dining Room, spa treatment facilities, and gardens, the Inn is built to accommodate weekend get-aways as well as large celebrations.  Summer bonfires at night and live music in our BBQ Barn round out a casual but lively country experience.

Rich in history, the building has been serving the local community and city escapists for over 100 years.   Having just undergone a renovation in the Spring of 2014, the building inherently represents the many eras in which it has served its guests.  The rooming house era of the 1920s, the booming Catskill Resort era of the ‘50s and ‘60s and all the in betweens.  The Arnold aims to respect our sense of place and history while giving guests a clean, contemporary sensibility.

The Team

The Arnold is owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Sims Foster and Kirsten Harlow Foster and their team.  The Foster family has been in Livingston Manor for 5 generations dating back to the 1910s.  More recently the Foster’s have helped revitalize their hometown by opening 3 different restaurants since 2002.  Their latest, The Lazy Beagle, was lost to a devastating fire in late 2012.  With the prodding and support of the local community the Fosters, rather than retreat after this tragedy, decided to forge ahead into bigger waters.  The proud result is The Arnold.

When not at The Arnold, Kirsten and Sims have active careers that take them to the city and beyond.  Kirsten is an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and Sims is a hospitality executive working with some of the most noted chefs and bar personalities in the world.  Adelaide, Kirsten & Sims’ English bulldog, can also be found running around the property and helping to keep the lawns clear by picking up sticks.  She’s very friendly and loves attention – and other dogs!

Clark Hoskin serves as Executive Chef of the Arnold House.  Starting like many chefs around the world, Clark got an early start in hospitality working as a dishwasher in his local pizza place in Connecticut at 15 years old.  After making his way to a cook he never looked back.  After 5 more years in Connecticut and Rhode Island at a variety of restaurants Clark decided to make a career out of his passion and moved to Charlotte NC.

Clark quickly found success for himself in the city becoming sous chef at The Capital grille in its first 2 years.  From there he worked as a sous chef at BLT steak before taking an opportunity in New Jersey with his fiance as Executive Chef at Fleming's Steakhouse.

After 3 years in the NYC metro area, Clark and his wife Justine decided to head to the mountains.  Initially they moved to East Branch where they operated a small hotel and restaurant.  From there the opportunity to join The Arnold House team pulled them away and Clark joined the growing company initially as Chef de Cuisine.  In August of 2016 he was deservedly promoted to Executive Chef and now runs all things culinary for the hotel, tavern and events.

Clark uses his 18 years of experience to create a memorable guest experience for everyone that comes through the door at The Arnold.  Utilizing all the local farmers in the area he creates a menu so that everyone can find something they love.  You will also often see him harvesting produce right from our own garden as his commitment to fresh ingredients is as strong as his passion for serving tasteful food.
